Why birds love the space under your panels

Solar panels sit a few inches above your roof, and that gap gives birds a large, dry, shaded space that's warm from the panels above and hidden from predators. On Oʻahu, pigeons and mynahs find it fast. Once one pair nests successfully, their droppings and pheromones signal to others that it's a safe spot — so the problem compounds season after season.

What it actually costs you

Lost output. Droppings and nesting debris on the glass block light. Bird droppings are particularly bad because they're opaque and bond hard — a single well-placed dropping can shade an entire cell string.

Chewed wiring. This is the expensive one. Nests attract rodents, and rodents chew. The DC wiring runs under your panels, and damaged wiring means system faults, costly repairs, and a genuine roof fire risk.

Fire risk from debris. Nesting material is dry twigs and grass packed against electrical connections. That's a bad combination sitting on your roof.

Health and mess. Bird droppings can carry disease, and nesting debris blocks gutters and stains everything below the array.

Noise. Birds scratching and calling above your bedroom at 5am is the reason a lot of people finally call us.

How we bird proof

Galvanized steel mesh. We fit a fine galvanized mesh around the entire perimeter of your array, sealing the gap between the bottom edge of your panels and the roof. Birds and rodents physically can't get under, but air still circulates freely — which matters, because panels need airflow underneath to run efficiently.

Clipped, not drilled. The mesh attaches with clips designed for solar frames. We don't drill into your panels or your roof, so nothing about the install threatens your panel warranty or your roof's waterproofing.

Discreet. It's a dark mesh that sits tight to the frame line. From the street you won't notice it.

Our process

1. Inspection. We check the full perimeter and look underneath for existing nests, droppings and any wiring damage.

2. Clear-out. If birds have already moved in, everything comes out first. There's no point sealing a nest in.

3. Clean. We clean the panels and the roof area underneath. Droppings and pheromone residue are exactly what attracts the next bird.

4. Mesh install. Galvanized mesh clipped around the full perimeter.

5. Photo proof. Before-and-after photos texted the same day.

Common questions

Will mesh make my panels overheat? No. Mesh blocks animals, not air. The airflow that cools your panels passes straight through.

Will it damage my roof or panels? No drilling into panels or roof — the clips are made for solar frames. Nothing that affects your warranty or waterproofing.

How long does it last? Galvanized steel is built for salt air and sun. Once it's on it needs essentially no maintenance — we just check it during your regular cleans.

Birds are already nesting. Is it too late? Not at all, but don't wait. We clear the nests, clean up, then seal the perimeter. The longer nesting continues, the higher the chance of wiring damage.

Can you do this at the same time as a clean? Yes, and it's the sensible way to do it — the panels need cleaning as part of the job anyway.
